Payward’s AAVE purchase gives the token a new disclosed institutional holder, but the size of the position and its potential influence remain unknown. The company said its affiliated fund, Digital Asset Special Investments I, LP, and the fund’s clients acquired an undisclosed amount through secondary-market purchases. Payward’s announcement says further purchases may follow.
The deal brings Payward and client capital into AAVE without disclosing how much voting weight they may hold.
What did Payward buy, and how?
Payward said the fund and its clients bought AAVE, the Aave network’s native token, from the secondary market. That means the purchase involved existing tokens changing hands, rather than a disclosed token issuance by Aave. The company did not publish the quantity, price, total value or allocation between the fund and its clients.
Payward described the investment as a way to give clients exposure to onchain credit markets and decentralized finance. AAVE holders have governance rights over the network and its treasury, according to the announcement, so the tokens can carry a role in decisions as well as market exposure. But without the number of tokens or information about how the buyers will vote, the announcement does not establish the scale of any governance influence.
Does this settle the earlier reported stake talks?
No: the disclosed purchase is a token acquisition, and it does not confirm a purchase of equity in Aave Labs or Aave Group. The Block reported that Payward had been linked in June to discussions around a 15% stake at a $385 million valuation, and that Aave founder Stani Kulechov pushed back on the report. The outlet also said Kulechov acknowledged discussions about investors buying portions of Aave Labs’ AAVE allocation through partnership deals.
The new announcement leaves open the possibility of additional AAVE purchases, while describing future collaboration as an area the companies may explore. It does not disclose a target stake, purchase schedule or specific joint initiative. The Block’s report likewise notes that financial terms were not disclosed.
What could the purchase mean for AAVE holders?
The purchase adds a company with a large crypto platform and an asset-management business to the set of disclosed AAVE buyers, while the exact exposure remains opaque. Payward said the investment reflects client demand for exposure to DeFi infrastructure; that is the company’s stated rationale, not evidence of a broader shift in institutional demand. Aave’s token governance rights give the investment potential relevance to the network’s community, but its practical effect will depend on the undisclosed position and any future participation in votes.
